Rainbow washing is the act of adding rainbow colors and LGBTQ imagery to advertising to indicate progressive support for LGBTQ equality which earns consumer credibility with minimum of effort or pragmatic result.
It's Pride Month and let's talk about 'Rainbow washing'.
Rainbow washing is defined as the act of adding rainbow colors and LGBTQ imagery to advertising, apparel, or accessories to indicate progressive support for LGBTQ equality which earns consumer credibility with minimum of effort or pragmatic result. Pride month isn't the one month a year you remember to recognize our community or the one month we 'get to be gay'. It's set in June as the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising when NYC police raided a local gay club which sparked six days of protest against law enforcement for the unfair and often deadly treatment of the LGBTQ community.
A way to avoid rainbow washing is to support your LGBTQ+ workforce year round with resources, adequate healthcare, gender inclusive policies, and education. It doesn't have to be June for you to educate your managers on how to better support the LGBTQ+ population in your company. I've provided the helpful graphic below to clarify what Pride support is really all about.
While Omni Inclusive has the pride flag in it's logo, let me clarify that we proudly display those colors year round because myself and our staff fully support the LGBTQ+ community all 12 months of the year.
